A terrific deployment of a traditional design element.
“The design concept derives from traditional Islamic patterns and includes a diaphanous ‘mashrabiya’ which will protect the most severely exposed parts of the building, contributing to a projected 20% reduction in the cooling load to ensure a sustainable and efficient building. The ‘mashrabiya’ (مشربية or شناشيل) has been conceived as a dynamic façade which will open and close in response to the sun’s path….” (desMena)
“The exterior is covered in a crystalline honeycomb facade that serves to temper heat gain from the sun. The pattern was generated by a mathematically pre-rationalized form which was derived from Islamic designs – it acts as a dynamic ‘Mashrabiya’ that opens and closes in accordance with the sun’s path. Estimates indicated that the screen will reduce cooling loads by 25%. Each tower will feature a double-height space at the top of the tower for receptions that features asoutherly sloping roof. Both roofs are equipped with photovoltaic systems that will generate around 5% of their total energy demand.” (Inhabitat.com)

First I’ve heard of this technology. I suppose I can imagine taking photos for 3D reproduction on a screen. It’s harder to think of how it will print. If possible, it seems like a great technology for photographers who like to experiment with first-gen technology. If you can deform the 3D image in a 3D way, even better.

The picture is of a planned redesign of the pylons that carry electricity wires. Don’t know when they’ll be built, but the concept is stunning.

Well, like Windows, he’s half right. Harvard ain’t going anywhere. But The University of Colorado should probably start shopping around for buyers.
